Pip’s First Flight and the Power of Visualization
Are you aware of just how powerful visualization is in our lives?
Many of us are doing lots of visualizations everyday. But there’s a problem. We aren’t doing them to help create the life we want. We’re instead imagining the worst case scenario of things and worrying about the “what ifs.”
Was there ever a time you stressed yourself out over the possibility of something negative happening? That’s a great example of visualization working against you.
It’s science!
There’s a strong scientific explanation for how and why visualization works. It’s a well-studied and proven technique intentionally used by people to bring positive outcomes into their life.
What is visualization?
So what is it?
Visualization is the practice of imagining something you want in life and actually experiencing it in your mind. As if it were true today.
It can involve all five senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. Or, you can simply imagine it in your mind (which is what I do).
This pulls on principles from the law of attraction. This law states that we attract what we focus our thoughts on.
How does visualization work?
If someone constantly thinks negatively, it will be difficult to recognize the positive in life and attract more of it. Instead, they attract more negative.
If someone constantly thinks positively and imagines the best possible outcomes, it helps them have faith in their ability to perform. This impacts their performance in a very positive way.
Pip’s visualizations of his first flight
Pip demonstrated a simple example of visualization:
He was preparing to jump off a cliff to take his first flight. Naturally, he was nervous! He experienced both the negative and positive impacts of visualization.

Pip’s Negative Visualization
Pip pictured every worst-case scenario when he imagined his first flight. But these imagined scenarios have real-life emotion tied to them! Pip truly felt himself fail. Of course he was terrified to take his first flight.
When you focus on and emotionally experience negative thoughts, you will negatively impact your real-life outcomes.

Pip’s Positive Visualization
Pip later shifted his thoughts to focus on the best-case scenarios. These imagined scenarios also have real-life emotion tied to them. But this time, Pip felt what it was like to succeed! He felt the sun on his back. He felt the pride in his chest. He felt how majestic flying would be.
This impacted his real-life performance when the day came to fly. He didn’t stand on the edge of the cliff shaking with anxiety and imagining negative outcomes. He felt nervous, but knew he could do it. He stood on the cliff and felt grounded. It didn’t feel like his first time flying. He’d flown successfully so many times before in his mind!
Our mind can be tricked in our favor. When we experience strong emotion, our mind doesn’t discern whether or not it is real. That means we can imagine and truly experience the emotions that come from positive visualization. And our mind will believe them!
Can you see how this helped Pip with his first flight? Doing something for the first time can be scary. But Pip had stood on the edge of that cliff many times before in his mind. And he knew what to expect when he jumped. Success!
Famous People Known for Using Visualization
Jim Carrey:
“I would visualize things coming to me. It would just make me feel better. Visualization works if you work hard. That’s the thing. You can’t just visualize and go eat a sandwich.”
Oprah WInfrey
“If you can see it and believe it, it is a lot easier to achieve it.”
Will Smith
“Our thoughts, our feelings, our dreams, our ideas are physical in the universe. That if we dream something, if we picture something, it adds a physical thrust towards the realization that we can put into the Universe.”
Muhammad Ali
“If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it – then I can achieve it”
